Kobe Golf Club Review: Playing Japan’s Oldest Course

★★★★★ 4.5 (108 Google reviews)View on Google Maps →

There is a golf club on Mount Rokko that has been there since 1903. Before most of Japan knew what golf was, before there were bullet trains or skyscrapers or a modern city below, someone was playing golf on this mountain. That club is Kobe Golf Club, the oldest golf course in Japan — and one of the most quietly remarkable places to play in the country.

Japan’s First Golf Course

Kobe Golf Club was founded by Arthur Hesketh Groom, a British merchant based in Kobe who wanted somewhere to play. He cleared land on the upper slopes of Mount Rokko, laid out nine holes, and started a club. What began as a private retreat for the foreign trading community eventually became a fixture of Japanese golf history.

The course today is still nine holes — and still feels like it belongs to a different era. The layout is compact and precise, shaped entirely by the mountain terrain. Nothing has been flattened or engineered into submission. The holes work with the land.

The Course

Nine holes, mountain terrain, views of Kobe Bay on clear days. This is not a course that will challenge a scratch player with length — it is short by modern standards and the layout is simple. But that’s not the point. The point is the place: the cool mountain air, the old trees, the sense of standing where Japanese golf began.

Playing Kobe Golf Club is less about the scorecard and more about the experience. Bring someone who appreciates that kind of thing. Walk slowly. Look around.

Getting On

Kobe Golf Club is private. Access requires a member introduction. Given the historical significance of the club and the limited membership, this is a round that takes some planning — but for golfers with a genuine interest in the history of the game in Japan, it’s worth pursuing.
