Arima Onsen is the oldest and one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan. The ryokan, the narrow streets, the two distinct types of mineral water — gold and silver spring — that have made it a destination for over a thousand years. And nearby, on the hills above this historic town, there is excellent golf.
The Course
Arima Royal Golf Club occupies the kind of terrain that makes Hyogo golf distinct: hillside fairways, significant elevation changes between tees and greens, and tree cover that puts a premium on accuracy rather than distance. The course demands a complete game — driver accuracy, controlled iron play, and confident putting on greens that slope with the mountain contours.
Several holes offer views over the surrounding hills that justify stopping to look regardless of your score. The course is challenging enough to be satisfying and fair enough to be enjoyable — a balance that some hillside courses don’t quite achieve.
The Real Reason to Come: Arima Onsen
Golf at Arima Royal and then an evening at an Arima Onsen ryokan is one of the best day-and-night combinations in the Kansai region. After 18 holes on mountain terrain, a long soak in gold spring water — rich with iron and salt, staining the water a deep amber — is a particular kind of recovery that no sports drink can replicate.
Book a ryokan with dinner included. Arrive before dark. Eat well, sleep in a futon, and wake up feeling considerably better than you did the evening before.
