Otaki is one of those Chiba towns that most people from Tokyo have never visited — inland, forested, and unhurried. It’s also home to Otaki Castle, a reconstructed hilltop castle that stands above the surrounding cedars. The golf club that shares the area’s name matches its surroundings: a course that takes maintenance seriously and rewards the extra drive to get there.
The Course
Otaki Castle Golf Club is a forest course — tall cedar and pine trees line virtually every hole, making accuracy off the tee non-negotiable. The layout demands thoughtful play rather than power, and the forest setting gives the round a distinct atmosphere that flat parkland courses simply don’t have.
The maintenance is the course’s standout quality — fairways, greens, bunkers, and facilities are all consistently well-kept, and the staff are regarded as some of the most attentive in the area. All carts come equipped with GPS navigation. Regular visitors describe the value as excellent for the quality on offer, and the “Passport” plan (breakfast, lunch and drinks included) is particularly well-reviewed for groups.
Getting There
