Koka is better known for its ninja heritage and Shigaraki pottery than for golf — but Asamiya Golf Course makes a strong case for adding a round to any visit to this quietly attractive part of Shiga. Set in the forested hills of the tea-growing district, the course has a natural character that’s hard to replicate closer to the cities.
The Course
Asamiya is a hillside course that works with the terrain rather than against it. The undulating layout demands accurate tee shots and thoughtful approach play, with tree-lined corridors that define each hole cleanly. The greens are well-maintained and the overall conditioning reflects a course that takes its standards seriously.
The setting in the Asamiya tea district gives the course a distinct atmosphere — the same forested hillsides that produce some of Japan’s finest green tea surround the layout, and the air quality and quiet up here are genuinely different from the city courses further north.
