Most visitors to Japan do Osaka and Kyoto. They eat their way through Dotonbori, walk through Arashiyama, and call it a trip. All great choices.
But if you play golf, there’s one more stop worth adding: Hyogo Prefecture. And Lake Swan Country Club is the perfect reason to make it.
Kansai’s Best-Kept Golf Secret
Hyogo Prefecture — home to Kobe, Himeji Castle, and some of Japan’s most scenic countryside — is packed with golf courses. While Tokyo golfers head to Chiba, Kansai golfers head to Hyogo. The courses here tend to be hillier, more dramatic, and surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes you stop mid-swing to take it in.
Lake Swan Country Club sits in that category. Set in the hills of Hyogo, the course offers rolling fairways, autumn foliage that rivals anything in Kyoto, and panoramic views stretching all the way to what appears to be a suspension bridge in the distance.
The Course
Lake Swan is a hilly, tree-lined course that demands accuracy off the tee. The layout winds through valleys and up ridgelines, with each hole offering a different challenge. It’s not a flat resort course — you’ll use every club in your bag and need to think your way around.
The autumn colours make it especially worth visiting between late October and mid-November. The red and orange foliage framing the fairways is genuinely spectacular — and unlike Kyoto’s famous temples, you have it mostly to yourself.

Here’s how I’d structure a Kansai trip for golfers:
- Day 1–2: Osaka — Arrive, eat everything. Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, yakiniku, takoyaki. This is non-negotiable.
- Day 3: Kyoto — Day trip from Osaka. Temples, bamboo grove, matcha everything.
- Day 4: Golf in Hyogo — Head out to Lake Swan or one of the many other courses in the hills. 18 holes, lunch, onsen.
- Day 5: Kobe — Kobe beef lunch, Nunobiki Herb Garden, Meriken Park. Then fly home happy.
