Some golf courses are just nice. Waialae Country Club is something else entirely.

Home of the Sony Open in Hawaii — one of the PGA Tour’s most beloved early-season events — Waialae is a private members’ club in Kahala, Honolulu that occasionally opens its gates to guests. If you ever get the chance to play here, take it without hesitation.

The Iconic “W” Palm Trees

The signature W-shaped palms near the ocean — the shot that defines Waialae.

Before you even tee off, Waialae makes its mark. The course is framed by towering coconut palms — and on several holes near the ocean, they lean dramatically in the trade winds, crossing each other to form a natural “W” shape against the blue Hawaiian sky.

It sounds like a small thing. It’s not. Standing on the fairway with the Pacific stretching out behind those palms, white sand bunkers catching the light, trade winds steady on your face — this is what golf in Hawaii is supposed to feel like.

I took a photo. I’ve taken the same photo every time I’ve played here.

The Course Itself

Cart paths wind alongside the Pacific — the ocean is never far from view at Waialae.

Waialae plays as a par-72 layout, originally designed by Seth Raynor in 1927 and later refined over the decades. It’s a classic parkland-style course with a strong oceanic character — several holes run along or toward the water, and the trade winds are always a factor.

What strikes you immediately is the condition. The fairways are firm and fast. The greens are Tour-quality — quick, subtle, and punishing if you miss the right spots. This is the same course the pros play in January, and it shows.

The layout is not brutally long, but it demands precision. Miss the fairway here and you’re dealing with thick kikuyu rough, deep bunkers, or ocean wind that makes distance control feel like a guessing game. Strategic play wins at Waialae — the same way it does on Tour.

The Practice Facilities

A full grass driving range surrounded by palms — the practice facilities match the Tour-quality course.

One of the things that genuinely surprised me about Waialae: the practice facilities are exceptional.

The driving range is a full grass range surrounded by — you guessed it — palm trees. It’s spacious, immaculate, and gives you real feedback from real turf. There’s also a large putting green and short game area, so you can properly warm up before your round rather than just loosening up and hoping for the best.

For a pilot with limited ground time in Honolulu, being able to hit balls properly before teeing off makes a real difference. I’ve played courses where the “practice area” is three mats and a net. This is not that.

The Atmosphere

Waialae feels serious without being stuffy. The staff are professional and welcoming. The lava rock clubhouse entrance with the course logo is immediately recognizable if you’ve ever watched the Sony Open on TV — and there’s something quietly thrilling about walking through the same gate the pros walk through every January.

The other golfers you’ll encounter here are members and their guests — serious players who love the game. The pace is good. The whole experience feels elevated without being intimidating.

Final Verdict

Waialae Country Club is the kind of course that reminds you why you love golf. The setting is stunning. The conditions are Tour-quality. The “W” palms are everything. And the practice range alone is better than most full courses I’ve played.

If you’re based in Tokyo and flying the Honolulu route, put this one on the list. It’s not easy to get a tee time as a guest — but when you do, don’t waste it.
