Kyoto gets golf tourists almost by accident. Most people come for the temples, the bamboo groves, the kaiseki dinners and the quiet back streets of Gion. But golfers who look a little further find something worth finding: Kyoto Golf Club, one of the Kansai region’s most storied clubs — and one with two very different courses to choose from.
Two Courses, Two Experiences
Kyoto Golf Club operates two separate courses: Kamigamo Course in the northern hills of Kyoto city, and Funayama Course in Kameoka, about 30 minutes west of the city center.
Kamigamo Course
The Kamigamo Course sits in the hills near Kamigamo Shrine — one of Kyoto’s oldest Shinto shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The setting alone is remarkable: forested hillsides, mature trees, and a quiet that feels genuinely removed from the city below. The course is traditional in character, with tight tree-lined fairways that reward accuracy over power. A round here has a distinctly classical feel, which fits the surroundings perfectly.
Funayama Course
The Funayama Course in Kameoka offers a different kind of challenge. Set in a valley surrounded by wooded hills, the terrain is naturally rolling and the layout uses the landscape well — holes vary from tighter, tree-framed par 4s to more open approaches where the pond and bunkering come into play. Several holes require careful tee shot placement before the approach angle becomes viable. The front and back nines have different personalities, which keeps the round interesting throughout.
The Kyoto Golf Trip
Adding a round at Kyoto Golf Club to a Kyoto trip works better than most people expect. Kameoka (Funayama) is 30 minutes from central Kyoto by JR San’in Line — quick enough to play a morning round and be back in the city for a late lunch or afternoon temple visit. Kamigamo is even closer, making it an easy half-day from anywhere in central Kyoto.
The contrast is genuinely enjoyable: 18 holes on a quiet course in the hills, then back into one of the world’s most beautiful cities for the evening. Arashiyama bamboo grove is 20 minutes from Kyoto Station. Dinner in Gion is booked in advance.
