Lake Biwa is Japan’s largest lake and one of the oldest lakes in the world. It dominates the landscape of Shiga Prefecture and defines the region’s identity in a way that few natural features do. Biwako Country Club takes full advantage: on clear days, the lake appears in the background of approach shots like a backdrop someone placed deliberately.
The Course
Biwako Country Club plays across gently rolling terrain near the lake’s southern shore. The layout is open enough to be enjoyable for a range of playing levels — the fairways give you room to work with — while the greens and approach angles provide enough challenge to make a well-played round feel earned.
The views are the memorable element here. The lake appears on multiple holes, either as a direct visual or framed in the distance through trees. In autumn, the foliage around the course adds colour to an already scenic setting. In spring, the overall atmosphere is simply pleasant in a way that’s hard to argue with.
Shiga as a Golf Destination
Shiga Prefecture is underrated as a golf destination. The courses here tend to be less crowded than those in Hyogo or Osaka, the scenery involves the lake rather than just trees, and the prefectural capital Otsu is a pleasant base with excellent access to both Kyoto (15 minutes by train) and Osaka (40 minutes).
For golfers who have already done the Hyogo and Osaka courses, Shiga offers a different experience worth exploring. The Lake Biwa setting alone justifies the detour.
