If you want to play a course that has genuinely tested the best players in Japan, Ibaraki Country Club is the answer. This is tournament golf — the kind of layout where every hole has an opinion about how you should play it, and where going off-script gets punished.
A Tournament Pedigree
Ibaraki Country Club, located in Ibaraki City just north of Osaka, has hosted the Japan Open and numerous other professional events over the years. That history shows in the design: the course demands precision, penalizes aggressive misses, and rewards players who can manage their game rather than overpower it.
The East and West courses offer different personalities within the same property. The West Course is generally considered the tougher test — tighter fairways, more strategic bunkering, greens that slope in ways you won’t fully appreciate until you’ve three-putted once or twice.
The Course
Ibaraki is a tree-lined parkland course at its core, but the design has teeth. Fairway bunkers are placed exactly where a comfortable drive tends to land. Greens are large but heavily contoured — two-putting from the wrong tier requires a very good first putt. Water comes into play on several holes and acts as more than decoration.
The rough is maintained to tournament standards on good days, which means it’s thick enough to genuinely matter. Club selection on approach shots is important: the greens are receptive but not soft, and missing the correct quadrant makes par difficult.
Location and Access
Ibaraki City sits directly between Osaka and Kyoto — about 20–30 minutes from central Osaka by car, and a similar distance from Kyoto. This makes it an excellent choice for a round embedded in a broader Kansai trip. Play in the morning, head into Osaka for lunch and the afternoon, eat well, sleep well.
The course is accessible to visitors on weekdays and some weekend slots — easier to book than Hyogo’s more private clubs, and competitive in terms of quality. Booking via Rakuten GORA is the most straightforward route.
After the Round: Osaka
Osaka rewards golfers well. Twenty minutes from the course, you’re in one of Japan’s great food cities. Dotonbori for atmosphere and takoyaki. Kuromon Market for fresh seafood. Namba for everything else. The city runs late, eats well, and doesn’t require much planning — just show up hungry.
