Sakai City in northern Fukui sits on the Echizen coastal plain, between the Sea of Japan and the Asuwa River basin that drains the mountains to the east. The area is best known for Maruoka Castle — one of Japan’s twelve surviving original castles, small and perfectly preserved on a low hill above the plain — and for Tojinbo, the dramatic basalt cliffs on the nearby coast.
