Sakai City in northern Fukui sits on the Echizen coastal plain, between the Sea of Japan and the Asuwa River basin that drains the mountains to the east. The area is best known for Maruoka Castle — one of Japan’s twelve surviving original castles, small and perfectly preserved on a low hill above the plain — and for Tojinbo, the dramatic basalt cliffs on the nearby coast. Fukui Country Club is set in this accessible flatland landscape.
The Course
The course is laid out on the flat Echizen plain, using water features and bunkering to create challenge in the absence of significant elevation. Sea breezes from the Japan Sea coast occasionally reach the course, adding a variable to club selection on exposed holes. The conditioning is reliable and the round offers good value relative to the Kanazawa-area courses across the border.
