Imagine standing on a fairway, mid-swing, as pink cherry blossom petals drift past you in the breeze. That’s golf in Japan in spring — and it’s as magical as it sounds.
Cherry blossom season (late March to early April) is one of the best times to visit Japan, and combining it with a round of golf is something every golfer should experience at least once.
Why Golf During Cherry Blossom Season?
Most Japanese golf courses are lined with cherry blossom trees. It’s not a coincidence — many courses were designed with the scenery in mind. When the sakura blooms, the fairways transform into something out of a painting.
On top of that, the weather in late March and early April is perfect for golf — mild temperatures, low humidity, and long daylight hours. It’s arguably the best playing conditions of the year.
When to Go
Cherry blossoms in the Tokyo area typically peak between late March and early April. The bloom lasts about one to two weeks, so timing matters.
- Late March — Early bloom, fewer crowds on the course
- Early April — Full bloom, the most spectacular views
- Mid April — Petals falling (hanafubuki) — still beautiful, almost poetic
Pro tip: book your tee time at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Spring is peak season and courses fill up fast.
What to Expect on the Course
Japanese golf courses go all out during cherry blossom season. Many offer special spring menus in the clubhouse, seasonal decorations, and even hanami (flower viewing) setups near the 19th hole.
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself stopping mid-round to take photos. Everyone does — even the locals.
Tips for Foreign Visitors

- Check the forecast — Rain can hit the Tokyo area in early April. Build in a backup day if you can
- Dress in layers — Mornings can still be cool in late March
- Bring a camera — You will want it
A Round to Remember
I’ve played many rounds in Japan across all seasons, and spring is my favorite. There’s something about the combination of a well-maintained course, mild weather, and cherry blossoms overhead that makes every shot feel a little more special.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan this spring, put a round of golf on your itinerary. You won’t regret it.
