Mount Fuji is Japan’s most iconic symbol — a perfectly symmetrical volcano that has inspired artists, poets, and travelers for centuries. But here’s something most visitors don’t know: you can play golf with a view of it.
As a pilot, I’ve seen Mount Fuji from above more times than I can count. But playing golf with that view from the fairway is something else entirely. The Fuji area has some of Japan’s most scenic golf courses, and they’re well worth the trip from Tokyo.
Why Golf Near Mount Fuji?
The courses around Mount Fuji sit at higher elevation than Tokyo, which means cooler temperatures, cleaner air, and stunning views on clear days. The Gotemba and Fujikawaguchiko areas in particular have a concentration of high-quality courses that attract golfers from across Japan — and increasingly, from overseas.
The best months for Fuji views are October through February, when the air is clear and the mountain is often capped with snow. Spring and autumn are ideal for combining the scenery with comfortable playing conditions.

Tips for Visiting
- Check the weather — Mount Fuji is often hidden by clouds. Clear days are most common in the morning, so early tee times give you the best chance of a good view
- Book in advance — Fuji-area courses are popular with Japanese golfers and fill up on weekends
- Combine with sightseeing — The area around Fuji (Hakone, Kawaguchiko, Gotemba Premium Outlets) makes for a great 2–3 day trip
- Rent a car — Public transport to these courses can be inconvenient. Renting a car in Tokyo gives you much more flexibility
Getting There from Tokyo
By car, the Fuji area is about 90 minutes from central Tokyo via the Tomei Expressway. By train, take the Shinkansen to Mishima or Shin-Fuji and arrange a taxi or rental car from there.
If you’re flying into Haneda or Narita, renting a car at the airport and driving directly to the Fuji area is a great option — especially if you want to play on your first or last day in Japan.
A View Worth Every Shot
Standing on the first tee with Mount Fuji rising in the distance is one of those moments that reminds you why travel is worth it. The courses near Fuji aren’t just golf courses — they’re an experience.
If you’re planning a golf trip to Japan, make sure at least one round is within sight of the mountain.
