The Course That Defines Japanese Golf

Designed by Charles Hugh Alison in 1932, Hirono is a masterpiece of strategic design. Alison — the same architect behind some of England’s finest heathland courses — created something that has barely needed updating in nearly a century. The routing uses the natural terrain of the Rokko foothills: pine forests, dramatic elevation changes, a small lake that comes into play memorably on the back nine.

Every hole has a clear identity. Every decision off the tee matters. The bunkering is strategic rather than decorative — placed exactly where a slightly off-line drive will find it. Greens are firm, fast, and subtly but critically contoured. Hirono is a course that rewards thought and punishes impatience.

Getting On

Hirono is a private members-only club. An introduction from a member is required to play. This is, by most accounts, the most difficult tee time to secure in Japan — and that exclusivity is part of what has preserved the course’s exceptional condition and unhurried atmosphere over decades.

If you have the connection, this is the round of a lifetime in Japan. If you don’t, it’s worth building toward — it’s the kind of course that makes you think seriously about whom you know.

After the Round

Sanda is about 40 minutes from central Kobe and an hour from Osaka. After a round at Hirono, the standard move is dinner in Kobe — the city and the occasion both call for Kobe beef, properly served at a teppanyaki counter, with a cold Kirin and no particular hurry.
