Low-cost carriers advertise attractive base fares — but the total cost can surprise you if you’re not prepared. Here’s what to watch for on Japan’s LCC routes.
The Baggage Trap
This is the #1 source of unexpected costs. Most LCCs (ZIPAIR, Peach, Jetstar) include only carry-on baggage in the base fare. Checked baggage is a paid add-on — and buying it at the airport counter is always significantly more expensive than purchasing in advance online.
Rule: If you need checked baggage, add it during booking — never at the airport.
Seat Selection Fees
Choosing your seat costs extra. On short flights, skip it. On long-haul flights (like Narita–Honolulu at 8+ hours), paying a small amount for a window or aisle seat is worth it for comfort.
Airport Check-In Fees
Some LCCs charge a fee if you check in at the airport counter instead of online. Peach and Jetstar charge this; ZIPAIR currently does not. Regardless, always complete online check-in via the airline’s app or website before arriving at the airport.
Payment Surcharges
Credit card fees are common on LCC booking sites. Check which payment methods are fee-free — often bank transfers, convenience store payment (コンビニ払い), or specific cards bypass the surcharge.
Calculate the Real Total
Before booking, always add up: Base fare + baggage fee + seat selection + meals = your real total. Compare this against a full-service carrier. Sometimes the gap is smaller than you think. Sometimes ZIPAIR wins by a wide margin. Either way, knowing the real number prevents surprises.

最大の落とし穴：手荷物料金
ほとんどのLCC（ZIPAIR・Peach・Jetstarなど）の基本運賃には機内持込手荷物のみが含まれます。預け荷物は別途購入が必要で、空港カウンターでの当日購入はオンライン事前購入より大幅に高くなります。
鉄則：預け荷物が必要な場合は予約時に追加する。空港での当日追加は割高です。
座席指定料金
座席を指定したい場合は追加料金がかかります。短距離なら不要なことも多いですが、成田〜ホノルルのような8時間以上の長距離便では、窓側や通路側を確保するために少額を払う価値があります。
空港チェックインの手数料
空港カウンターでのチェックインに手数料を請求するLCCがあります（PeachやJetstarなど）。ZIPAIRは現在このような手数料はありませんが、いずれにせよ出発前にアプリや公式サイトでオンラインチェックインするのが基本です。
決済手数料

予約前に必ず計算してください：基本運賃＋手荷物料金＋座席指定＋食事代＝本当の総額。この総額を大手航空会社と比較して初めて、「本当にLCCがお得か」が分かります。計画的に利用すれば、LCCは強力な節約手段になります。
