Walking onto a Japanese golf course for the first time, you will encounter signage, scorecards, and announcements entirely in Japanese. While the game itself is universal, knowing a handful of key terms will help you navigate the day with confidence and avoid any unnecessary confusion.
Scorecard Basics
Japanese scorecards follow a familiar layout, but the labels are in Japanese. Here are the terms you will see most often:
- ホール (hōru) — Hole number
- 距離 (kyori) — Distance (in yards or meters)
- パー (pā) — Par
- ハンディキャップ (handikyanpu) — Handicap index for the hole
- スコア (sukoa) — Score
- 合計 (gōkei) — Total
- OUT / IN — Front nine / Back nine (same as Western usage)
On-Course Signs and Markers
- OB (アウトオブバウンズ) — Out of bounds, marked with white stakes
- ペナルティエリア (penaluti eria) — Penalty area (red or yellow stakes)
- カート道路 (kāto dōro) — Cart path
- 修理地 (shūrichi) — Ground under repair (free relief)
- 前の組をお待ちください — Please wait for the group ahead
- 進行が遅れています — Your group is behind pace of play
Common Caddie and Clubhouse Terms
- ナイスショット (naisu shotto) — Nice shot (you will hear this constantly)
- ナイスオン (naisu on) — Nice approach (ball on the green)
- ナイスパット (naisu patto) — Nice putt
- お先に (osaki ni) — “Go ahead” — said when you are about to putt out of turn
- お疲れ様でした (otsukaresama deshita) — “Good work” / “Thank you for the round”
- よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) — “Pleased to play with you” — said at the first tee
Yardage Markers
Most Japanese courses use colored poles or discs in the fairway to indicate distances. The standard system is: red = 100 yards, white = 150 yards, blue = 200 yards. Some courses use meters instead of yards — check with your caddie or the scorecard at the start of the round.
You do not need fluent Japanese to enjoy golf in Japan — but a handful of these terms will make you feel more at home, earn a smile from your caddie, and help you navigate the course confidently from the first tee to the final putt.
