Nara is famous for its deer. Friendly, slightly demanding deer that wander through Nara Park, approach tourists for crackers, and occasionally mistake a scorecard for food. The deer are not at Kasugadai Country Club, but the ancient forested hills that define the landscape around Nara’s famous temples extend to the courses in the area — and the golf is better than most visitors expect.
Playing Golf in Nara Prefecture
Nara Prefecture doesn’t have the golf reputation of Hyogo or the accessibility of Osaka’s suburban courses, but it has something both of those lack: genuine quiet. The Nara Golf Day
Nara is 45 minutes from Osaka and 30 minutes from Kyoto by express train — close enough to build a full day around golf and sightseeing without feeling rushed. The standard move: arrive in Nara in the morning, walk through Nara Park and the deer before your round, play in the afternoon, and take the train back to Osaka or Kyoto for dinner.
Todai-ji — the great bronze Buddha temple — and Kasuga Taisha shrine are both within walking distance of central Nara. Neither requires more than 90 minutes to appreciate properly, which leaves plenty of time for the golf course.
