Tomakomai is the industrial port city at the base of the Iburi region, dominated by the paper mills and petrochemical plants that have processed the resources of the Hokkaido interior since the Meiji era. But directly above the city rises Mount Tarumae — a 1,041-meter active volcano with a distinctive lava dome visible from the city and from the course that takes its name. Tarumae Country Club sits in the flat lowland terrain between the port and the volcano’s flanks.
The Course
The course is laid out on the flat Tomakomai lowlands with the Tarumae volcano as a constant visual anchor. The flat terrain uses water features and bunkering to create challenge, and the Hokkaido wind across the exposed sections plays a genuine role in club selection. The course is well-maintained and the overall experience has the spaciousness that Hokkaido flatland courses deliver so well. Best from June to October when the Hokkaido summer is at its finest.
